Help an insect feel like its as snug as a bug in a rug with a mug, These easy-to-make bug hotels are an easy activity which provide a safe space for insects in your garden or green space.

With the seasons changing, it’s important to give bugs a space to shelter, hide from predators and potentially raise their young.

There are a range of minibeasts which may visit, including woodlice, ladybirds, bees, ants, spiders and many more.

Autumn is a great time to put your mug bug hotel out as many animals are looking for space spaces to hibernate in over winter. Also, with the trees dropping their beautiful leaves at this time of year, we can use these to stuff our hotels.

Simply use an old or second-hand mug, and fill it with natural materials, including leaves, sticks, bark, straw, pinecones, bamboo and old paper – or whichever you have which is easily accessible.

You can even check on it from time to time by looking in at it, being careful not to knock it or disturb any insects, and see which minibeasts may have taken shelter!
