Photo competition 2023

Entries are now closed

Photography is a great way to capture a moment and to get outside and connect with nature.

We're shaking it up with some new categories and twists on the classics - this year the adult categories are: macro moments, citizens of nature, comedy snaps, my favourite nature reserve, wildlife encounters and plants and fungi.

Budding photographers aged 16 or younger can take part in the wild youth category, submitting their three favourite photos of the past year. Full details of all the categories can be found below.

The deadline for entries was Monday 31 July at midnight

COMPETITION CLOSED.

What are the categories?

Macro moments

Look closer at the wildlife around you, the closer you look the more you’ll start to see... Zoom in and capture delicate details such as the vivid patterns on a butterfly wing or the eye of a bumblebee.
In this category we're looking for the aspects of the wildlife we love to be seen in a different way, like the crab spider below which lies in wait in the centre of a flower.

Citizens of nature

Show us your wild side! We'd love to see you, the people of Gloucestershire, out exploring, discovering a new place, or showing how you give wildlife a helping hand.
In this category, entries must include someone interacting with nature in some way. Explore the outdoors with your friends and family and capture them on camera strolling through a wildflower meadow, bird watching with binoculars in hand, or taking a paddle in a stream, the list is endless though please make sure you ask the model’s permission first!

Comedy snaps

This category adds the fun to celebrating our natural world while also shining a light on why we need to protect it.
From a mouse swinging from bird feeder to a deer rolling its eyes, entries to this category will bring a smile to everyone’s faces.

My favourite nature reserve

GWT cares for a stunning array of nature reserves – from Woorgreens in the Forest of Dean to Greystones Farm in the heart of the Cotswolds.
Capture the picturesque scenery and the wildlife that calls it home. The perfect excuse to take a trip to your favourite GWT nature reserve – or to explore a reserve you’ve not yet discovered.
Entries to this category must be taken on GWT nature reserves.

Wildlife encounters

Whether its a hedgehog exploring the haven of your garden to the birds and mammals you see out roaming the countryside, this category is for your wildlife encounters.
Remember to give them the space they need and watch your feet!

Plants and fungi

This is a new category to admire the plants and fungi of Gloucestershire, whether it's a Badgeworth buttercup, an ancient oak tree, or a fly agaric mushroom. Capture these diverse living beings to celebrate plants and fungi, no matter how big or small.

Be careful not to touch any plants or fungi that you find, as they can sting or be poisonous.
