Orchards through the seasons

The Severn Treescapes project has teamed up with the Wye Valley National Landscape to run a series of workshops to increase confidence among landowners to plant and look after traditional orchards and fruit trees.

Orchard Produce - Juice and Cider/Perry

By kind invitation of Tim Andrews of Orchard Revival

This workshop is another in the suite of workshops looking at orchards through the year, and through a lifetime.

Tim Andrews is an orchardist and small scale cider producer. He has guided us through how to look after our orchard trees, and now he will teach us to use the produce from them

Orchards are a fantastic mix of habitat – grassland, woodland edge, deadwood, nectar, niches, crevices, shelter, shade. They also provide a mass of food for wildlife, as well as human food source. There are increasing numbers of community orchards and their value as spaces for immersion in nature and enhancing wellbeing is well known. We want to give people the confidence to use their own or local orchards in their own homes, as well as in the countryside.

We will take a quick trip to a local cider/perry orchard to chat about trees and varieties etc. and collect some fruit. Then head back to the barn for look and talk about scratting kit and pressing stuff and processing equipment.

There will be talk about mixing fruits for cider etc.

Teas and coffees will be provided but please bring your own lunch.

Wet weather gear and warm clothing as we will be outside and in a barn.

Future workshops

Future workshops will cover grafting, surveying and recording, and produce (juicing/cider/perry and preserves).
All workshops will be rerun next season.
