This decision was not a reflection of the biodiversity value of the sites, which are both fantastic Sites of Special Scientific Interest and important parts of the county’s ecological network. The Trust did not own or have management control on either site, which meant they did not qualify to be Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserves.
Whilst the Trust has excellent relationships with both landowners, there was no prospect of the Trust acquiring or securing a management agreement for either site. The sites are well managed by the landowners or their tenants and are in agri-environment schemes that will ensure this continues. As both sites are SSSIs they also benefit from a high level of statutory protection.
By withdrawing from the sites, the Trust has been able to redirect its resources towards sites which are in greater need. The acquisition of a new reserve at Dimmel’s Dale, which is in desperate need of restoration, is one example of how staff capacity has been redirected.
The Trust will maintain its relationship with the landowners at both sites and will provide support to them should it be needed. Public access to both sites remains via the Public Right of Way Network, but we ask visitors to be mindful that they are not part of the GWT estate.
